This category exists for two different jobs. The first is terrain. Ladakh, Spiti, Kashmir, Sikkim and the road into most wildlife lodges will punish a low car, and a Fortuner or Land Cruiser with a driver who knows the surface is the difference between an adventure and a recovery truck. The second is capacity, where a Crafter carries nine people and their luggage in one vehicle instead of two.
What an SUV does not do is add luggage space in proportion to seats. A Fortuner seats six but takes three large cases, because the third row eats the boot. Guests regularly book one expecting seven seats and seven bags, and that is the single most common correction we make on this category.
On flat highway routes such as Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, an SUV is the wrong choice. It rides harder than an Innova, drinks more fuel and costs more. We will tell you when a sedan or an MPV is genuinely the better vehicle for the road you are on.

The SUV Indian tour operators trust. High clearance, tough suspension and mechanics who can fix one in any town. Seats six comfortably, but the third row costs you boot space, so count bags before people.
7 seats 3 bags inside Hybrid
The newer Innova, hybrid and noticeably quieter than the Crysta. Not a true off roader, but it handles broken tarmac and long highway days better than its price suggests.
6 seats 4 bags inside Diesel
What we send to Ladakh, Spiti and the Northeast when it is available. Handles altitude, gravel and water crossings without complaint, and the drivers who work those roads prefer it to anything else.
9 to 12 seats 9 bags inside Diesel
A van rather than an SUV, with standing height inside and a separate luggage area. When nine people and nine suitcases need one vehicle, this is the answer that avoids running two cars.
6 seats 4 bags inside Petrol or Diesel
The most spacious of the three German SUVs and the best of them for luggage. Suits a family of five who want an SUV rather than an MPV.
5 seats 3 bags inside Petrol or Diesel
A strong brand signal for UK and US guests, and genuinely capable off road, though we keep it to good surfaces because repairs upcountry are slow. Best used for city work and estate arrivals.
4 to 6 seats 3 bags inside Petrol or Diesel
A large luxury SUV that rides high without feeling like a truck. Popular for corporate movements in Delhi and Mumbai where the guest wants space and a badge.
5 seats 3 bags inside Petrol or Diesel
Built for exactly the roads that lead to Jawai, Ranthambore and the tea estates. Firm ride on highways, so best booked for the leg where the terrain earns it.
4 to 6 seats 3 bags inside Petrol
Quieter than the X7 inside and slightly softer over city potholes. Interchangeable with it in practice, so we quote whichever has better availability on your dates.

No. Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are joined by good highways and an Innova or a sedan is more comfortable on them. SUVs earn their rate where the surface breaks up: Ladakh, Spiti, Kashmir, the Northeast, and the last stretches into wildlife lodges.
The Toyota Land Cruiser if it is available, otherwise a Fortuner. Both handle altitude, gravel and river crossings without drama, and drivers who work those roads know how to nurse them. We do not send low clearance luxury SUVs onto Himalayan passes.
A Fortuner seats six with three large suitcases, which surprises guests who assume seven seats means seven bags. Six travellers with a case each are better in a Crafter or an MPV. The third row in most SUVs is for short hops rather than a five hour drive.
It is a nine to twelve seat van with a proper luggage area, used for family groups and small tour parties who want one vehicle rather than two cars. Standing height inside makes loading easy, and it copes with highways better than a tempo traveller.
A folding wheelchair fits in the boot of a Fortuner or a Crafter, and the Crafter is easier to board because of the step and the wide sliding door. If mobility is a real consideration, tell us and we will quote our accessible vehicle with an attendant instead of guessing.
