On the high passes the Land Cruiser is in a class of its own. Its four wheel drive, strong diesel engine and robust build cope with the altitude, gravel and stream crossings of Ladakh and Spiti, and the drivers who work those roads trust it more than any other vehicle.
It is also comfortable. The cabin is roomy for four to five adults, the boot takes four large suitcases, and the ride is calmer than a Fortuner on long days at altitude.
Honest limitation: it is expensive and stock is limited, especially in the summer season for Ladakh. On lower hill routes a Fortuner does the job well for less.
