The Fortuner is what we send when the road stops being a highway. Its ground clearance, sturdy suspension and simple, strong diesel engine make it reliable on hill roads, gravel tracks into wildlife lodges and the broken stretches that appear on many rural routes. Drivers know it well and parts are available almost everywhere.
It is the standard vehicle for Himachal, Uttarakhand, Kashmir and Sikkim, and for the final roads into Ranthambore, Jawai, Kanha and similar parks. It also handles Ladakh, though we prefer a Land Cruiser there when one is available.
Honest limitation: seven seats do not mean seven bags. With the third row in use the boot takes very little, so we book it as four to five passengers with three large cases. On flat highway routes an Innova is more comfortable and costs less.
