Heritage Tour of Blue City of Rajasthan- Jodhpur

One always wonders why the blue city of Rajasthan, Jodhpur is colored blue. Almost all blue painted houses, huts and stalls give a unique view to the visitors, who walk through the rustic roads, cobbled passages and grand entrance doors of the city. Mehrangarh Fort
Mehrangarh Fort is the largest fort in India. Mehrangarh Fort offers the brilliant vantage point from which to survey the understated clusters of blue houses which bring about a scintillating view from the top of the fort. The stained glass panels and sandstone walls were initially maintained by Gaj Singh 2nd in the year 1947 who was the last ruler of the Rathore clan. The fort has excellent weaponry from the legacies of the Rathore army and has a beautiful selection of palanquin, royal clothes and delicate miniature painting along the premises of the fort. The nearby Chokelao bagh is decorated with peacock motifs which were considered a royal symbol during the rule of these ancient kings. There are a total of 91 Ramayana paintings which showcase the ancient forests of kishkindha and panchavati. The paintings are in the form of folklore narratives where each character can be shown multiple times in the same painting. Many people come to Mehrangarh Fort only to be enamored by the paintings of Lord Rama and his wife Goddess Sita.

Jaswant Thadas
