Bikaner is situated in the arid and vast desert landscape of Thar. In 1465 Rao Bika, a warrior chieftain, Rajput by caste,was leader of the Rathor clan, and he conquered various parts of land from other enemy Rajputana clans. In 1488 he thus founded the city of Bikaner.
