Frequently Asked Questions
Thrissur Pooram is unique in its scale, competitive structure, and combination of spectacles. No other Kerala festival brings together up to 100 caparisoned elephants, 100+ Panchavadyam musicians, the visually extraordinary Kudamattam umbrella competition, and a continuous all-night fireworks display of this magnitude — all at a single venue over 36 hours.
At peak moments, up to 100 elephants participate across all the competing temple groups. The two main groups — Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu — each field 15 elephants for the key confrontation, with additional elephants in the approach processions. The lead elephants are among the most celebrated in Kerala, named and revered like local heroes.
Panchavadyam is Kerala's classical percussion ensemble involving five traditional instruments performed in a mathematical crescendo structure. A full ensemble at Thrissur Pooram can involve over 100 musicians. The performance builds from a stately opening to a finale of extraordinary speed and volume — one of the most powerful percussion experiences available anywhere in the world.
Kudamattam is the competitive exchange of ceremonial umbrellas held above the lead elephants of each participating temple group. Each team attempts to outdo the other with increasingly spectacular umbrella designs, producing a rapid-fire visual display of colour and pattern that draws gasps and cheers from the crowd. It is uniquely Keralite and found nowhere else in Indian festival culture.
The Vedikkettu fireworks begin after midnight and continue until dawn — typically running for 4-5 hours. This is not a short fireworks show but a sustained aerial bombardment of extraordinary scale. The detonations are intensely loud and the sky is continuously illuminated. Many visitors describe it as the most spectacular fireworks experience of their lives.
April in Thrissur is very hot and humid (32-38°C). Wear lightweight, breathable, light-coloured clothing. Comfortable closed shoes are recommended for standing on the temple grounds for extended periods. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat for daytime, and earplugs for the fireworks (highly recommended though optional).
Thrissur is on the main railway line and receives frequent trains from Kochi Ernakulam (1.5 hours), Kozhikode (2 hours), Trivandrum (3.5 hours), and Chennai. The nearest airport is Cochin International (80 km, about 1.5 hours by road). Top Indian Holidays arranges all transfers as part of the Thrissur Pooram package.
The festival involves standing for extended periods in large crowds. For elderly travellers or those with mobility limitations, Top Indian Holidays arranges premium viewing positions with seating where available, private transport between viewing areas, and timed visits focused on the most accessible and spectacular moments rather than the entire 36-hour event.

Yes — Thrissur Pooram takes place on the temple grounds and surrounding streets which are open to all visitors. The processions and main competitions happen in the public temple square. Some inner temple sanctums follow traditional entry restrictions, but the festival itself — its elephants, music, umbrellas, and fireworks — is entirely accessible to all visitors.
At least 4-5 months in advance. Thrissur's hotels fill completely and prices increase significantly as the date approaches. Flights into Kochi also fill for the Pooram period. Contact Top Indian Holidays well ahead of your target year to secure the best accommodation and viewing arrangements.
