Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour

09 Nights / 10 Days   Fully Guided Tours   Private Car

Delhi - Lucknow - Sravasti - Kushinagar - Patna - Rajgir - Bodhgaya - Varanasi - Delhi

Trip Overview

This Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour is designed to follow the sacred geography associated with the life, enlightenment, teachings, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha. The journey connects historically significant monastic centres, meditation sites, ancient universities, and stupas that shaped early Buddhist philosophy and practice across northern India.

Beginning in Delhi and moving through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the route traces Buddha’s path from early teaching centres to places of final liberation. These locations are not only archaeological landmarks but remain active spiritual spaces where monks, scholars, and pilgrims continue centuries-old traditions of meditation and study.

Planned at a steady and reflective pace, this itinerary allows pilgrims to engage deeply with Buddhist history rather than rushing between destinations. It is ideal for Buddhist devotees, spiritual seekers, scholars, and travellers interested in early Indian civilisation and the spread of Buddhism.

Highlights of the Tour :
  • Buddhist pilgrimage tracing the complete life journey of Lord Buddha
  • Visit to Sravasti, where Buddha spent most of his monastic life
  • Parinirvana site at Kushinagar
  • Ancient learning centres of Rajgir and Nalanda region
  • Enlightenment site at Bodhgaya
  • First sermon location at Varanasi (Sarnath)
  • Balanced itinerary with meditation-friendly pacing

Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour :- Detail Itinerary

Day 1  Arrival in Delhi

Arrival at Delhi International Airport followed by assisted transfer to the hotel. Delhi serves as the international gateway for most Buddhist pilgrims entering India and offers logistical ease before beginning the spiritual circuit.

The rest of the day is kept relaxed to allow recovery from travel. This initial rest is important before starting a journey that involves long drives and continuous historical exploration.
Overnight stay in Delhi.

Day 2 Delhi to Lucknow

After breakfast, you travel to Lucknow by road or flight. While primarily known for its Nawabi heritage, Lucknow also acts as a key transit point connecting central Buddhist pilgrimage routes of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

On arrival, check-in is followed by rest. The city offers a calm transition from the capital into the spiritual heartland of the Gangetic plains.
Overnight stay in Lucknow.

Day 3 Lucknow to Sravasti

After breakfast, you proceed to Sravasti, one of the most important Buddhist sites where Lord Buddha spent the maximum number of rainy seasons. The journey passes through rural landscapes that reflect the ancient setting of Buddhist monastic life.

On arrival, guided visits include Jetavana Monastery and Anathapindika Stupa. These sites illustrate how monastic discipline, meditation, and teaching evolved during Buddha’s lifetime.

Time is provided for quiet reflection, allowing pilgrims to absorb the spiritual atmosphere of one of Buddhism’s most significant centres. Overnight stay in Sravasti.

Day 4 Sravasti to Kushinagar

After breakfast, you depart for Kushinagar, the place where Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana. The drive follows ancient teaching routes described in early Buddhist texts.

On arrival, you visit the Mahaparinirvana Temple and associated stupas. The reclining Buddha statue represents the moment of final liberation, making this one of the most emotionally profound sites on the pilgrimage.

The evening is kept peaceful, encouraging contemplation and meditation. Overnight stay in Kushinagar.

Day 5 Kushinagar to Patna

After breakfast, you travel to Patna, historically known as Pataliputra, once a major centre of political power and Buddhist influence during the Mauryan Empire.

On arrival, visits may include museums and sites that highlight Emperor Ashoka’s role in spreading Buddhism across Asia. The guide explains how state patronage supported monastic institutions.

Overnight stay in Patna.

Day 6 Patna to Rajgir

After breakfast, you proceed to Rajgir, an ancient city surrounded by forested hills and deeply connected to Buddha’s teachings. Rajgir served as an early capital and a major centre for Buddhist councils.

Guided visits include Gridhakuta Hill, where Buddha delivered important sermons, and other meditation sites used by monks for centuries.

The serene environment encourages reflection, making Rajgir one of the most spiritually calming destinations on the route. Overnight stay near Rajgir.

Day 7 Rajgir to Bodhgaya

After breakfast, you travel to Bodhgaya, the most sacred site in Buddhism. The journey symbolises the final movement toward enlightenment.

On arrival, you visit the Mahabodhi Temple complex, built around the Bodhi Tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Pilgrims from around the world gather here for meditation and prayer.

Time is allocated for extended reflection and personal meditation. Overnight stay in Bodhgaya.

Day 8 Bodhgaya – Meditation & Monastic Exploration

This full day is dedicated to Bodhgaya. Visits include international monasteries representing Buddhist traditions from different countries.

The guide explains variations in Buddhist practice while maintaining core philosophical unity. The environment supports deep contemplation and spiritual learning.
Overnight stay in Bodhgaya.

Day 9  Bodhgaya to Varanasi

After breakfast, you drive to Varanasi and continue to Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first sermon after enlightenment. This site marks the formal beginning of Buddhist teachings.

Guided visits include the Dhamek Stupa and ruins of ancient monasteries. The guide explains the importance of the Eightfold Path taught here.
Overnight stay in Varanasi.

because my time with him in India was the most organized and exciting two weeks of my existence. I spent two weeks touring Southern India with a class of 16 American students and one professor who had never been to India, but thanks to Nand, the trip was seamless. He took us to incredible locations and called upon his personal connections to create opportunities for us and ensure that we were involved and informed. The entire time we were there, Nand made India feel like home. Somehow, he found a way for us to experience a range of incredible, new experiences in a completly unfamiliar place, while always ensuring our safety, comfort, and awareness. There is nothing Nand will not do to make your trip incredible. I cannot reccommend him enough.    ...Read More

My wife had a wonderful 28 day trip around the main sights in Rajasthan, The Golden Triangle and onwards to Varanasi. Nand organised the hotels to our budget, the driver and guides all of which were very good. Without his expertise this trip would not have been possible so a big "thank you"!  ...Read More

I cannot recommend them enough. The hotel accommodations were great (we stayed at the trident hotels). The food was delicious. Everyone we met in India was so friendly and kind. We always felt safe. Our tour guide Nand was super nice and informative. Our kids’ favorite stop was the Monkey Temple :) The rickshaw ride through Delhi was exciting and fun.  ...Read More

I’ve made such wonderful memories here in India. For a week, I had the chance to work on my sister’s women’s healthcare project in the village of Chandelao, and then spent a weekend in Jaipur. The accommodations have been top notch, and both our guides- Kartika and Nand Singh- have become our good friends. Top Indian Holidays is a tour company dedicated to exceptional service. Despite traveling alone with my sister, we felt so safe and at home. I truly have fallen in love with I did!  ...Read More

Last year, I travelled throughout northern India for one month as part of a course at Saint Mary’s College. We had such incredible adventures, thanks to our in country guide and friend Nand Singh Rathore. I was so impressed by his company’s commitment to excellent hospitality that I planned another visit this March. The main purpose of my trip was to work on a women’s healthcare project in Chandelao. Top Indian Holidays was so helpful in organizing transportation and accommodations. Our guide, Kartika, and our driver, Bhim, made sure we were well taken care of. My project would not have gone smoothly if it weren’t for them- and I am so proud to call them my new friends! My sister and I stayed an extra weekend in Jaipur, and Nand Singh was amazing as usual. He is so, so good to us!!! If you visit India through Top Indian Holidays, I assure you that you will have a safe, adventurous, and unforgettable experience!  ...Read More

Top Indian Holidays is THE BEST! We came to India for the Jain Festival in south India at Shravanabelagola (which happens only once every 12 years) and continued on to the Golden Temple in Amritsar and to sit for teachings with His Holiness, the XIV Dalai Lama in Dharamsala. We've travelled through many, many countries with numerous very good travel agencies but none have provided the excellent service that Top Indian Holidays provided. They are committed to excellence.
