Best of North East India Tour :- Detail Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Guwahati and Drive to Shillong

Arrival in Guwahati marks the beginning of your journey through North East India. After meeting your driver at the airport, the route gradually leaves the busy plains of Assam and climbs toward the green hills of Meghalaya. The drive to Shillong introduces travelers to the peaceful landscapes of the region, with winding mountain roads, forests and occasional viewpoints overlooking valleys.

During the journey, a stop at Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani Lake, offers a beautiful first impression of Meghalaya. The vast lake surrounded by forested hills creates a calm and picturesque setting. Many travelers pause here to take photographs or simply enjoy the cool mountain air before continuing toward Shillong.

By afternoon you arrive in Shillong, a charming hill city known for its colonial architecture, lively markets and cool climate. After hotel check-in, the evening can be spent exploring the local streets or visiting nearby viewpoints that overlook the surrounding hills.

Day 2 Shillong Local Sightseeing

Morning in Shillong begins with a relaxed exploration of the city’s main attractions. Known as the Scotland of the East, Shillong offers beautiful landscapes, colonial heritage and vibrant local culture. The first stop is usually Shillong Peak, the highest point in the region, providing panoramic views of the city and surrounding hills.

Later the tour continues to Elephant Falls, one of Meghalaya’s most popular natural attractions. Cascading through layers of rock and forest, the waterfall is surrounded by walking paths that allow visitors to observe the scenery from different viewpoints.

In the afternoon travelers often visit Ward’s Lake and the bustling Police Bazaar market area. The market offers a chance to see local handicrafts, traditional clothing and regional food items while experiencing the daily life of Shillong residents.

Day 3 Shillong to Cherrapunji

Today’s journey moves deeper into Meghalaya as you travel to Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. The drive itself is spectacular, passing through rolling hills, valleys and cloud-covered landscapes that define the beauty of this region.

Upon arrival, travelers visit Nohkalikai Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in India. The dramatic drop of the waterfall into a turquoise pool creates one of the most photographed landscapes in Meghalaya. The surrounding viewpoints provide stunning panoramic scenery of the plateau and distant valleys.

Later the itinerary includes visits to the Seven Sisters Falls and nearby limestone caves. These natural formations highlight the geological diversity of the region and provide an unforgettable introduction to the dramatic landscapes of Cherrapunji.

Day 4 Cherrapunji to Kaziranga National Park

The route today leads back toward Assam as the journey continues to Kaziranga National Park, one of the most famous wildlife reserves in India. The drive passes through tea plantations, villages and fertile plains that form the landscape of the Brahmaputra River valley.

Upon arrival, travelers can enjoy a relaxed afternoon observing the peaceful surroundings of the national park area. The environment here contrasts sharply with the mountain scenery of Meghalaya, offering wide grasslands and wetlands that support diverse wildlife.

Kaziranga is internationally recognized for protecting the endangered one-horned rhinoceros. The park also shelters elephants, wild buffalo, deer and many species of birds, making it one of the most important wildlife destinations in Asia.

Day 5 Kaziranga Wildlife Safari

Early morning begins with an exciting jeep safari in Kaziranga National Park. Guided by experienced forest drivers, visitors travel through the park’s grasslands and wetlands searching for wildlife in their natural habitat.

Seeing the Indian one-horned rhinoceros grazing peacefully in open fields is often the highlight of the safari. Many travelers also encounter wild elephants, swamp deer and a wide variety of bird species during the journey through the reserve.

Later in the afternoon another safari may explore a different zone of the park, offering additional opportunities for wildlife photography and nature observation.

Day 6 Kaziranga to Gangtok

Today the journey continues toward the Himalayas as travelers leave Assam and move toward the mountain state of Sikkim. The drive is long but incredibly scenic, passing through tea gardens, rivers and forested hills.

Gradually the landscape changes as the road climbs into the Eastern Himalayas. The cooler mountain air and dramatic scenery mark the arrival into Sikkim, one of the most beautiful regions of North East India.

By evening you arrive in Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, known for its clean streets, monasteries and spectacular mountain views.

Day 7 Gangtok Sightseeing

The day begins with visits to several cultural and scenic attractions around Gangtok. One of the highlights is Rumtek Monastery, an important center of Tibetan Buddhism surrounded by peaceful mountain landscapes.

Another stop includes the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, where travelers can learn about the history, culture and traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. The institute houses rare manuscripts, artifacts and religious artwork.

Later the tour visits Tashi View Point, where clear weather often reveals distant views of the snow-covered peaks of the eastern Himalayas.

Day 8 Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass

A mountain excursion today takes travelers to Tsomgo Lake, a beautiful glacial lake located high in the Himalayas. The lake changes color depending on the season and reflects the surrounding snow-covered mountains.

The journey continues toward Nathula Pass, an important historical mountain pass that once formed part of the ancient Silk Route between India and Tibet. Standing near the border offers a unique perspective on the geography and history of the region.

Returning to Gangtok in the afternoon, travelers have time to explore local markets or enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the city.

Day 9 Gangtok Leisure Day

This day allows travelers to enjoy Gangtok at a relaxed pace. Visitors often explore MG Marg, the city’s main pedestrian street filled with cafés, restaurants and handicraft shops.

because my time with him in India was the most organized and exciting two weeks of my existence. I spent two weeks touring Southern India with a class of 16 American students and one professor who had never been to India, but thanks to Nand, the trip was seamless. He took us to incredible locations and called upon his personal connections to create opportunities for us and ensure that we were involved and informed. The entire time we were there, Nand made India feel like home. Somehow, he found a way for us to experience a range of incredible, new experiences in a completly unfamiliar place, while always ensuring our safety, comfort, and awareness. There is nothing Nand will not do to make your trip incredible. I cannot reccommend him enough.    ...Read More

My wife had a wonderful 28 day trip around the main sights in Rajasthan, The Golden Triangle and onwards to Varanasi. Nand organised the hotels to our budget, the driver and guides all of which were very good. Without his expertise this trip would not have been possible so a big "thank you"!  ...Read More

I cannot recommend them enough. The hotel accommodations were great (we stayed at the trident hotels). The food was delicious. Everyone we met in India was so friendly and kind. We always felt safe. Our tour guide Nand was super nice and informative. Our kids’ favorite stop was the Monkey Temple :) The rickshaw ride through Delhi was exciting and fun.  ...Read More

I’ve made such wonderful memories here in India. For a week, I had the chance to work on my sister’s women’s healthcare project in the village of Chandelao, and then spent a weekend in Jaipur. The accommodations have been top notch, and both our guides- Kartika and Nand Singh- have become our good friends. Top Indian Holidays is a tour company dedicated to exceptional service. Despite traveling alone with my sister, we felt so safe and at home. I truly have fallen in love with I did!  ...Read More

Last year, I travelled throughout northern India for one month as part of a course at Saint Mary’s College. We had such incredible adventures, thanks to our in country guide and friend Nand Singh Rathore. I was so impressed by his company’s commitment to excellent hospitality that I planned another visit this March. The main purpose of my trip was to work on a women’s healthcare project in Chandelao. Top Indian Holidays was so helpful in organizing transportation and accommodations. Our guide, Kartika, and our driver, Bhim, made sure we were well taken care of. My project would not have gone smoothly if it weren’t for them- and I am so proud to call them my new friends! My sister and I stayed an extra weekend in Jaipur, and Nand Singh was amazing as usual. He is so, so good to us!!! If you visit India through Top Indian Holidays, I assure you that you will have a safe, adventurous, and unforgettable experience!  ...Read More

We came to India for the Jain Festival in south India at Shravanabelagola (which happens only once every 12 years) and continued on to the Golden Temple in Amritsar and to sit for teachings with His Holiness, the XIV Dalai Lama in Dharamsala.
