Tawang Monastery & Arunachal Himalayan Tour :- Detail Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Guwahati

Arrival at Guwahati Airport begins the journey toward the remote mountain region of Arunachal Pradesh. Situated along the Brahmaputra River, Guwahati serves as the main gateway for travelers visiting the northeastern Himalayan states.

After meeting your driver, transfer to the hotel where you can relax after the journey. Later travelers may visit the famous Kamakhya Temple, located on Nilachal Hill overlooking the Brahmaputra River.

The evening can be spent exploring the local markets or enjoying the riverfront atmosphere of Guwahati before beginning the mountain drive the next day.

Day 2 Guwahati to Bomdila

After breakfast the journey begins toward Bomdila, located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. The road gradually leaves the plains of Assam and begins climbing into mountain landscapes filled with forests and river valleys.

The drive offers beautiful scenery as the route winds through hills and small villages. Prayer flags and Buddhist influences appear along the road, reflecting the cultural transition toward Arunachal Pradesh.

Arrival in Bomdila by evening allows travelers to relax and enjoy the cool mountain climate and peaceful surroundings.

Day 3 Bomdila to Dirang

Morning begins with a visit to Bomdila Monastery, a peaceful Buddhist monastery offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The monastery reflects the strong influence of Tibetan Buddhism in this region.

After sightseeing the journey continues toward Dirang, a beautiful Himalayan valley surrounded by forested hills and traditional villages. The route passes through scenic mountain landscapes and small settlements where local culture remains deeply rooted.

Arrival in Dirang offers time to explore the valley, known for its orchards, traditional houses and quiet mountain environment.

Day 4 Dirang to Tawang via Sela Pass

Today’s drive is one of the most dramatic routes in the Eastern Himalayas. The road climbs steadily toward Sela Pass, located at an altitude of over 13,000 feet. Snow-covered mountains and alpine landscapes dominate the scenery along the way.

At the top of the pass lies Sela Lake, a stunning high-altitude lake surrounded by rocky mountain peaks. The peaceful environment and crisp mountain air make it one of the most memorable stops of the journey.

Descending from the pass, the road continues toward Tawang, a remote mountain town known for its monasteries and Himalayan scenery.

Day 5 Tawang Monastery Sightseeing

Morning begins with a visit to the famous Tawang Monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in India. The monastery stands on a hillside overlooking the valley and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

Visitors explore the monastery complex, including prayer halls, courtyards and cultural museums that display ancient manuscripts and traditional artwork.

Later sightseeing includes visits to the Tawang War Memorial and nearby viewpoints where travelers can admire the dramatic Himalayan landscapes.

Day 6 Tawang High Altitude Lakes

The exploration of Tawang continues with visits to several high-altitude lakes and scenic locations surrounding the town. One of the most famous is Sangetsar Lake, also known as Madhuri Lake, located in a remote mountain valley.

The lake is surrounded by forests and snow-covered peaks, creating a peaceful and breathtaking environment. The journey to the lake itself passes through dramatic landscapes of rugged mountains and alpine meadows.

These remote locations highlight the natural beauty that makes Arunachal Pradesh travel so unique.

Day 7 Tawang Cultural Exploration

Another day in Tawang allows travelers to explore the local culture and surrounding villages. Traditional settlements around the region reflect the influence of Tibetan Buddhist traditions and mountain lifestyles.

Travelers may visit nearby monasteries and local markets where traditional crafts and regional foods can be observed.

The relaxed pace of the day allows visitors to appreciate the peaceful environment and mountain scenery that define the region.

Day 8 Tawang to Dirang

After breakfast the journey begins the return drive toward Dirang, once again crossing the dramatic landscapes of Sela Pass. Traveling the route in reverse reveals different perspectives of the mountains and valleys.

Travelers may stop at scenic viewpoints along the route to photograph the alpine scenery and snow-covered peaks.

Arrival in Dirang offers time to relax and enjoy the calm environment of the valley.

Day 9 Dirang to Guwahati

The journey continues back toward Guwahati, descending gradually from the mountains into the plains of Assam. The route passes through forests, rivers and rural landscapes that reveal the natural diversity of the region.

As the road reaches the Brahmaputra Valley, the terrain becomes flatter and warmer compared to the Himalayan mountains.

Arrival in Guwahati by evening allows travelers time to rest before departure.

because my time with him in India was the most organized and exciting two weeks of my existence. I spent two weeks touring Southern India with a class of 16 American students and one professor who had never been to India, but thanks to Nand, the trip was seamless. He took us to incredible locations and called upon his personal connections to create opportunities for us and ensure that we were involved and informed. The entire time we were there, Nand made India feel like home. Somehow, he found a way for us to experience a range of incredible, new experiences in a completly unfamiliar place, while always ensuring our safety, comfort, and awareness. There is nothing Nand will not do to make your trip incredible. I cannot reccommend him enough.    ...Read More

My wife had a wonderful 28 day trip around the main sights in Rajasthan, The Golden Triangle and onwards to Varanasi. Nand organised the hotels to our budget, the driver and guides all of which were very good. Without his expertise this trip would not have been possible so a big "thank you"!  ...Read More

Our trip with Top Indian Holidays was fantastic. Our family of five, including 3 small kids, visited the Golden Triangle of India. It was a wonderful cultural experience. I cannot recommend them enough. The hotel accommodations were great (we stayed at the trident hotels). The food was delicious. Everyone we met in India was so friendly and kind. We always felt safe. Our tour guide Nand was super nice and informative. Our kids’ favorite stop was the Monkey Temple :) The rickshaw ride through Delhi was exciting and fun.  ...Read More

I’ve made such wonderful memories here in India. For a week, I had the chance to work on my sister’s women’s healthcare project in the village of Chandelao, and then spent a weekend in Jaipur. The accommodations have been top notch, and both our guides- Kartika and Nand Singh- have become our good friends. Top Indian Holidays is a tour company dedicated to exceptional service. Despite traveling alone with my sister, we felt so safe and at home. I truly have fallen in love with I did!  ...Read More

Last year, I travelled throughout northern India for one month as part of a course at Saint Mary’s College. We had such incredible adventures, thanks to our in country guide and friend Nand Singh Rathore. I was so impressed by his company’s commitment to excellent hospitality that I planned another visit this March. The main purpose of my trip was to work on a women’s healthcare project in Chandelao. Top Indian Holidays was so helpful in organizing transportation and accommodations. Our guide, Kartika, and our driver, Bhim, made sure we were well taken care of. My project would not have gone smoothly if it weren’t for them- and I am so proud to call them my new friends! My sister and I stayed an extra weekend in Jaipur, and Nand Singh was amazing as usual. He is so, so good to us!!! If you visit India through Top Indian Holidays, I assure you that you will have a safe, adventurous, and unforgettable experience!  ...Read More

Top Indian Holidays is THE BEST! We came to India for the Jain Festival in south India at Shravanabelagola (which happens only once every 12 years) and continued on to the Golden Temple in Amritsar and to sit for teachings with His Holiness, the XIV Dalai Lama in Dharamsala. Top Indian Holidays handled all of the arrangements expertly, providing first rate service, excellent accommodations, transport, and first rate local guides! We've travelled through many, many countries with numerous very good travel agencies but none have provided the excellent service that Top Indian Holidays provided. They are committed to excellence.
